K-12 Finance Essentials

Course Description

K–12 Finance Essentials is a practical companion course for Nebraska school administrators that operates in parallel with EDAD 957: Public School Finance. Designed to bridge theory and practice, the course emphasizes real-world application of school finance concepts, including financial analysis, comparability, budgeting, revenue and spending patterns, transparency, and effective financial communication. Students are invited to participate in the EDAD 957 Zoom sessions throughout the semester to reinforce alignment and deepen understanding of Nebraska’s public school finance system.

Learning Objectives

  1. Apply principles of public-school finance to analyze budgets, revenues, and expenditures, and evaluate financial comparability within and across Nebraska school districts.
  2. Develop and interpret practical financial tools and reports to support sound budgeting decisions, ensure transparency, and meet state and local accountability expectations.
  3. Communicate school finance information effectively to diverse stakeholders by translating complex financial data into clear, accessible messages that support informed decision-making.
